My grand dad sent me this video in an email. extreme roller skating at the turn of the 20Th century.

Paris. The new sport of "Cycle-skating". Five men sit beside a car and fasten small wheels to their boots. They look very serious. The wheels are like small individual unicycles and they fasten at the knee. C/U of boot which has special grips which holds the wheels on to the feet. Man moves to show the camera how they work. He wheels his feet backwards and forwards - good C/U. A smooth surface is not essential for this sport, thus we see the men moving towards us through a forest on their wheels. They hold sticks and use them rather like ski poles to help them balance and propel themselves forward. L/S of the men "skiing" along a wide avenue in the forest, they move quite quickly. L/S of one of the men doing figure skating on the wheels. Very good! Quite a cool quirky invention. Precursor to roller blades! Was probably a Pathe Pictorial item. C/U Skaters about to commence another trick. They skate slowly round in circles man grabs girl's foot and arm. M/S Man holding girl's arm and foot and twisting her round. C/U Girl being twisted so that she is nearly touching ground. L/S Girl being twisted, so that she is nearly touching ground. They finish. C/U Crowd. C/U Skaters starting new routine. Man is twisting about so that her head touches the ground. L/S Skate act. Girl puts foot on man's shoulder, he then lifts his hands above his head and spins round with her showing that all he is holding of her is her foot which is on his shoulder. C/U Crowd, watching. Full titles read: "Skating sensational! Fast and tricky work by Finks and Ayres, the famous skaters from Cafe de Paris, etc." London (probably Pathe Studio). On a special 'rink' in the studio we see two men and one woman skating about on roller-skates and doing various stunts. They skate about and fling each other around, appearing to barely miss the floor. One of the men flings the girl, and we see it in slow motion. One of the men has his skate attached to a harness around the other man's chest - the harness is hidden by his silky shirt, so it looks like the skate is attached to the man's chest hair! The hanging man twirls around on his attached skate - yikes! All three join together for the last stunt: one man skates, carrying the girl in his arms and and swinging the other man by his skate and hand. Impressive stuff!
